A man whose son died of cancer in 2004 has been ordered to pay more than $5,000 in child support for the next 30 years.
The order was filed by a court judge on Thursday, but it is unclear when it will be handed down.
According to the order, Richard Lee, who was a senior at Lake County High School in Tulsa, died of pancreatic cancer in October 2004 at age 37.
He was awarded $5.5 million in child custody and support in 2007, but his ex-wife was not compensated for their children.
The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (ODHS) and the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office have both been investigating the case.
The case was made public by the state’s attorney general last month.
The state is appealing the order.
In a letter dated May 18, 2017, the judge wrote that she could not decide whether to accept the ex-husband’s request to have the child support ordered from the time of the child’s birth.
Lee is the oldest child in the family.
His sister, Patricia Lee, said in a statement to NBC affiliate WOAI that the family will appeal.
